Understanding Services

Coaching vs. Counseling

Understanding the difference ensures you get the right support for your situation.

Emotional Wellness Coaching

Mary's Counselor's Couch provides emotional wellness coaching. This is a growth-focused, forward-looking partnership designed to help you clarify your goals, understand yourself better, and build practical skills for emotional resilience and alignment.

Focus

Forward movement, goal achievement, personal growth, and clarity

Approach

Educational, skill-building, framework-driven, and solution-focused

Scope

Coaching supports on life goals, emotional clarity, relationships, and decision-making

Duration

Typically structured programs ranging from weeks to months, depending on engagement level

Role of Coach

Acts as a guide, strategist, and accountability partner — not a clinician or medical provider

Clinical Therapy & Counseling

Clinical therapy and counseling are mental health services provided by licensed mental health professionals. These services are regulated, evidence-based, and focused on treating diagnosed mental health conditions.

Approach

Clinically trained, evidence-based (CBT, DBT, EMDR, psychodynamic, etc.)

What Mary Does NOT Provide

To be clear about the scope of coaching services:

Diagnosis of mental health conditions

Treatment of mental illness or trauma disorders

Prescription of medications or psychiatric care

Therapy for diagnosed mental health conditions

Crisis intervention or emergency services

Replacement for licensed mental health care

Assessment of clinical risk or danger to self/others

Clinical supervision or medical oversight

Coaching Is Right for You If:

You are seeking personal growth and clarity

You want to build emotional resilience and decision-making skills

You are navigating relationship challenges (not trauma-rooted)

You want to align your life with your values

You are working toward specific goals

You want a forward-focused, growth-oriented partnership

You function well but want to optimize and develop

You are committed to implementing change and taking action

Seek Clinical Therapy If You Are:

Struggling with diagnosed mental health conditions (depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc.)

Recovering from trauma or abuse

Experiencing substance use or addiction concerns

In a mental health crisis

Having difficulty functioning in daily life

Experiencing suicidal or self-harm thoughts

Dealing with severe emotional dysregulation

Needing psychiatric evaluation or medication

Coaching & Therapy Can Complement

Many people benefit from both services simultaneously. You might work with a licensed therapist to address mental health concerns while working with a coach to build skills and achieve goals. These are complementary approaches, not competing ones. If you have a diagnosed condition or are in treatment, always inform both your therapist and coach so they can coordinate effectively.

Questions About Which Service Is Right?
