What to Expect in Your First Session

A structured overview of the intake process, what Mary assesses, and how to arrive prepared.

Before Your Session

Your first session is an intake — a structured conversation designed to understand your current situation, what brought you here, and what you want to build or change.

Arrive on time. Plan to be there 5–10 minutes early. If joining virtually, test your connection beforehand.

Bring clarity, not perfection. You don't need to have everything figured out. You need to be honest about where you are.

Minimize distractions. Find a quiet, private space where you can speak freely without interruptions.

What Mary Will Assess

During your first session, Mary will explore:

  • Your Current State: Where you are emotionally, relationally, and professionally right now.
  • Your History: Key experiences, patterns, and wounds that shape how you show up in the world.
  • Your Goals: What you want to change, build, understand, or heal through this work.
  • Your Readiness: Whether you are genuinely committed to the work and what support looks like for you.

Typical First Session Structure

Opening (5–10 minutes)

Settling in, building rapport, clarifying confidentiality and basic logistics.

Discovery (30–40 minutes)

Deep exploration of your situation, patterns, history, and what brought you to coaching.

Clarity & Next Steps (10–15 minutes)

Discussion of findings, initial observations, and whether this engagement feels like a fit for both of you.

What to Be Ready For

Questions about your past. Mary will ask about significant relationships, formative experiences, and patterns you've noticed about yourself.

Honest reflection. This is not a performance. You're being asked to tell the truth about where you are.

Vulnerability. Real work requires openness. If you're not ready to be honest, the work won't land.

Clear boundaries. Mary will explain what she can and cannot help with, and what falls outside her scope of practice.

Key Reminders

  • This first session is mutual discovery — Mary is also assessing fit.
  • You are not required to move forward after this session if it doesn't feel right.
  • Everything shared is confidential and protected under professional standards.
  • There are no wrong answers — only your truth.
